Small players in regards to gaming laptops make either sub standard laptops or way over priced custom jobbies with perlesant(sp) paint jobs. Our experiences differ regards dell. Still, dont support a US company that employs helpdesks offshore.

I have seen no evidence that they use substandard laptops, though agree the custom jobbies overpriced bit. Good thing about off the shelf chasis and components is reduced cost of maintenance and repair once your warranty has run out. Also the level of customer support offered by smaller businesses is superior, however you do run that risk that they may go under before your order is complete - so buy with a credit card!

QQ, Dell have bought Alienware, whilst it wont effect Alienware for a few months you can be assured that a year down the line that Alienware will be Dellified and completely shite also :(

Still, I know what my next laptop will be, I'll buy a high end Apple laptop. Competitively priced, high performance and they can now run Windows. Dual booting Windows XP/MacOS gives you the best of both worlds. I was going to do an exact comparison of the Apple laptop vs. the XPS but when I clicked the XPS link on Dell's site I got "Service unavailable", imagine that Dell fucking up :p A quick glance looks like the Apple laptops are fairly competitively priced against the XPS in terms of bangs per buck. Also whilst you can claim that generic laptops look worse you can't deny the sexehness of Apple's kit.

The "getting windows running on Apple hardware breakthrough" this last week is probably one of the best things to happen to the PC industry in years. Apple kit has always looked nice and performed well, the problem has been that it hasn't run standard software, now that they've managed to make a breakthrough in getting Windows XP running on Apple kit you really can have the best of both worlds, you could even tri-boot MacOS/Windows XP/Linux and have it all if you wanted ;)

You do realise that the 'breakthrough' was only very very minor. They only got it running but you couldnt do much with it. Dont expect full functionality and dont expect anything else to actually run but winxp.

They have all the drivers working now also on some of the systems, including the video drivers with hardware accelleration. Also, if you can run Windows you can run absolutely any .NET/Win32 app. that doesn't require any kind of low level hardware access, that is everything from Office, to IRC to MSN to a an FTP client to Internet Explorer to Paintshop Pro. As they've already got full driver support on some of the machines it's a pretty good bet they'll have it running on the rest soon, then there's little reason all your games wont run too - lots of reports that games are already running fine on the machines they have full driver support on. I wouldn't be suprised if Windows Vista has Mac drivers out the box, it'd make sense for Microsoft as they could sell many more Windows boxes.

Or if the Mac itself comes with Windows support ...

I think they are using hackers in the non-law breaking sense of the word. Also it wasn't Apple who offered the reward.

Not a bad thing IMO, without people willing to break this kind of thing we'd be stuck with horribly crippled products. Look at DVD Jon breaking the encryption on DVDs so that they can be played in my fantastic Linux PVR box for example. I'd argue that there's not enough of this type of "hacker" with the way painfully and disgustingly product crippling DRM is being pushed on everything and anything nowadays.
