issue with network and broadband connection

Post by Haarewin »

I've got a problem with my internet connection. (I'm using a broadband connection.)
It works fine when plugged into my pc, but if the network cable which connects my pc to my brothers is plugged in it doesn't work at all. Even through the router. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
i don't have a sig.

are u using a standard cross over cable to connect the two pcs ?
when u say it doesnt work at all do you mean your main pc doesnt connect to broadband ?

Ive never used a crossover cable to connect 2 pc's, hubs/swithes are so cheap nowadays it doesnt seem worth the hassle.

First step is to set up internet connection sharing on the first pc. Use the help for advice on how to do that.

If youve already done that then let us know - are other things can try after - though just buying an adsl router with combined switch and adsl modem is probably bar far the easiest, and most efficient solution.

i dont have a clue how to word this but i'll try:
if i connect the broadband to the router, then the router to my computer, i get no connection.
if the broadband is connected directly to my computer, i get a connection.
if my brothers computer is connected to my computer, i get no connection.
i've tried enabling internet connection sharing, but it says this "the specified service does not exist as an installed service".
this problem only surfaced last week.
i don't have a sig.

This is certainly what you need to aim for

internet
|
ADSL Modem
|
Router--PC
|
PC

Now best start at the beginning.

Do you know the LAN ip address of your router, if so can you ping it from either PC?
Does you're router show that the adsl modem has a valid connection via whatever management interface it uses (typically web browser or telnet)?

Will also help if you provide make and model of router and adsl modem.

Ahh. Got a mate who can pop around and have a look at it for you?

Actually ive just looked at the manual - it really isnt that bad - its worth following it through from scratch.
